Belladonna Spirit
Atropa Belladonna is a beautiful but deadly plant with a rich and varied history. Here is shown the spirit of Belladonna cutting the thread of life. Named after Atropos, one of the three goddess sisters of fate and destiny. these powerful sisters were simply named, “The Three Fates” in Greek Mythology. Atropos was the oldest of the three sisters and was known as the inflexible one. It was her who chose the manner of death, then ended the life of mortals by cutting their threads. She worked alongside her two sisters, Clotho who spun the thread of life, and Lachesis, who measured it.
the ‘Belladonna’ portion of the name is Italian for ‘beautiful woman’, a nod to days of old when women of the renaissance would use this poisonous plant as a cosmetic eye dropper to dilate their pupils.
Considered to be an important ingredient used in witch’s flying ointments, Belladonna is quite hallucinogenic and oftentimes deadly.
